I am just coming back from the campus presentation of Arcelor Mittal. The presentor were CEO of Arcelor Mittal China, (European) and the HR person, a (Chinese).
Truly they have got a lot in them to be the world’s Number-1. I liked the way they presented …particularly avoiding the subject of high energy usage, pollution and global warming from their talk, rather adding those of CSR and communities building . ...But what I also saw is that they are missing something very important… read below…!!
During the Q&A session, one guy asked “whether Arcelor Mittal is an Indian company?” CEO explained to him the formation of the company and stated that the company is headquartered in Europe and is not an Indian company. In my opinion the fact and figures of this explanation were enough to make any of the CEIBS guy clear on this point. But then what I saw simply astonished me. CEO, China said “How it can be an Indian company, we don’t have even a plant in India”.
What he stated did not make me surprise, but the way he said it (with a smile), made me realize that the magazines and reports about Arcelor employees’s outlook were not wrong. The people who worked long for the Arcelor, could not accept and appreciate the fact that Mittal’s takeover of Arcelor is for the good of economic decisions. Moreover some probably did not feel good because Mittal steel was a smaller (than Arcelor) company run by an Indian, Mr. L.N.Mittal.
Of course, there must be his reasons and thoughts behind what he said, but here I my perspective on his wordings.
Additionally, I endorse CEIBS’s emphasis upon organizational behavior studies and truly our OB’s Professor, has done a great job of making us sensitive towards such issues. :-)

The 11th Hour

Long ago, till the time, human used to consume everything powered by Sun, the ecosystem was balanced with everything being replenished. Animals, including humans used to eat either crops or other animals and the only basic support system was Sun. The population was maintained and the life was constant. And then sometime, we humans search fossil fuels (anything that gives Energy & Carbon). Our choices expanded and the era of consumerism started. We had access to energy with relatively much faster rate. And it meant that we had access to achievements too. Now everything we wanted was available with some level of research. It generated consumer’s demand; we used more energy that required more fossil fuels. It disturbed our ecosystem, the changes were increase in population, extinction of rare species and Global Warming. This is consumerism based upon usage of non-renewable sources of energy that also cause harm to the environment.
Do you know what harm happens with cutting of trees – Soil erosion, floods (tree holds an enormous amount of water in itself) and rain control.
Do you know that secretion of hazardous industrial waste into sea has caused multiple sea species to extinct. Also many places, the water is not proper to swim.
Do you know that the continuous C-pouring into the environment is causing global warming which makes our glaciers to melt, typhoons to come and temperatures to increase.
Do we ever think that every single synthetic product we use cause towards global warming. This computer on which you are reading this is a product of industrial work. And next time, you feel of upgrading your computer, you are adding to the global warming. Consumerism is parallel to global warming.
As one environmentalist has explained; assume a year which started with evolution of earth, we are living last fifteen minutes of 31st December. And within some time, we shall become extinct. Another explains that we dnt have to save earth, ironically, earth shall exist in some form or other, it is we humanity we have to save from becoming extinct.
Is there a way out????
We lack a proper leadership on this. And the available leadership is poor by standards and spirits. Earlier in the matters of environment, democrats and republicans used to join hands and approve the bills, unlike now when the opinion is divided tragically.
We are certainly not able to do all that which nature does. For example, science can not turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. We can not reverse the harm we have already made to the environment. But we can certainly slower the process of environmental damage.
Scientific view says that we have to fulfill our needs by recycling the usage of power.
J R Train lines in Japan uses the power from brake lining and resends to the power lines.
Insulated houses shall reduce the usage of wastage of energy.
Generation of electricity using the waves of the river.
Dance club powered by energy output from human movement.
Bank of America building is employs the concepts of energy savings and uses lesser energy.
The movie is a must watch for a very clear understanding of the environmental issues and that is something which is required of us a common human.

Fahrenheit 9/11

It is simply an ‘A’ class documentary. Just 2 hrs changed my views on America’s war on Iraq and Afghanistan.
As if the world’s most powerful man is not a fool- that was my opinion. Ironically, it is correct despite his child like insincere behavior. This man has just one thing on his mind – his family profits. But what surprised me even more is that despite all so close connections with Saudis and Bush’s alliance with the Osama’s close aids, Bush is not been openly accused except by Moore’s film. It is very much like something that happens in India i.e. politicians openly getting away even after breaking the laws.
Did you know or could you ever imagine that –
Bush spent 42% of his presidential time on vacations before 9/11.
James Bath – Bin Laden family’s close aid is a close friend of George W. Bush.

The Carlyle group’s (United Defense) – 11th largest US military contractor has a heavy investment from Laden’s family.
Saudi’s investment in USA is approximately $ 860 Bn.
Saudi’s own 6 - 7% of equity market of America.
Hamid Karzai, President appoint of Afghanistan was an advisor to Unocal, a business partner company of Bush’s family.
This documentary strongly contradicts Bush decision to attack Iraq. It clearly demonstrates that the available evidences signaled that Saudi is at fault (due to Osama’s establishment there) and not Iraq.

Though Iraq’s invasion was strongly opposed within America but Bush administration kept reciting the ‘was against terror’ slogans. His top executives issued statements about Iraq’s accessibility upon nuclear technology (though these statements were in stark contrast to their earlier remarks). The public bought in the artificial ‘America under attack’ image. Bush was able to gather Americans’ confidence.
This documentary covers emotions of the dead soldier’s family and the prevailing grief in Iraq. Speaks against the patriot bill and films Moore’s courageous stunt of asking (in person) congress members to send their kids to the war.
“Fahrenheit 9/11” is a must see for anyone who believes that there is no space for lethargy or non-action at the top. And so despite all your weaknesses and immaturity, you always stand a chance to reach till the top. Good Luck for your aims!!

CEIBS- preparations
Quite some time since I wrote something on this blog. Hey, but it doesn't mean that you feel that I've been Lazy !! It is just that I was and I am busy with the preparations for JOBLESSNESS and rejoining SCHOOL.
The biggest challenge for me and for many others whom I interacted with is of Loans. the problem is that CEIBS has no loan tie-ups with banks for overseas students except those from China and Europe. And the issue is that the bank personnel are not very confidents about the reputation of an intitute in China. So each bank manager, whom I met, I'd to show the MBA ratings and explain the progressive approaches CEIBS take to maintain a continuously Up path in the rankings. Obviously that 10 minutes discussion makes all the required difference but still the manager need a list of formalities done before student gets the cheque. I am sure that in India, CEIBS will certainly acquire the all prevailing good repute which ISB enjoys, but before that happens, I am sure that the loan release will be a lill painful to all the would-be students too. I shall cerainly try to discuss and open up ways bank tie ups for the Indian students too.
To get a VISA has realle been a cake walk with no necessity of an interview and a just 4 days wait. One could also get an express VISA, which is given on the same day of application (but for an extra fee..:( ....... )
CEIBS has given all new entrants, access to a common online forum which we are utilising for knowing each other and resolving other queries among ourselves or through the current students. {My friend is still scrolling in the pics of the :-),...... Guys are gettig ready fo ... Lolz }
And to our surprise and to kill our TOTAL freedom, school has o'ready sent us the scope of a Math/ Statistics test, which shall be taken during the orientation week. {A light Flavour of the days & Nights ahead..........:-) }
Enough for now... since after a days long trekking, I am feeling tired and would be hititng the bed soon......

Admit from CEIBS, China

This is such a good thing which has happened that I could not stop myself from making this post. Finally, I got an admist from globally 11th ranked MBA college, i.e. China Europe International Business School, situated in Shanghai. The charm of the city multiplies because of the coincident Olympics in China. I hope that when i reach in China, she shall be in a high spirits and we shall have that unique experience of being there. I am feeling lucky on one hand and remember that hard work of approximately 12 months on the other. As they say, End good so everyhting good.

wait...

One waits but gets no replies and time passes by....... Although it may not relle make the big difference because you are what you are and noone or nothing can take away your calmness (the same thing thats called opposite to aggression for the marketing people) because thats what is unique to you and thats what make you so special and thats what makes you able to sweet surrender. I red the below somewhere and found nice to be read by the person whom I write it for......

An Inconvenient Truth

“You look at that river gently flowing by. You notice the leaves rustling with the wind. You hear the birds; you hear the tree frogs. In the distance you hear a cow. You feel the grass. The mud gives a little bit on the river bank. It’s quiet; it’s peaceful. And all of a sudden, it’s a gear shift inside you. And it’s like taking a deep breath and going... 'Oh yeah, I forgot about this' – The opening Monologue of the movie
‘An Inconvenient Truth’ is a retrospective of all intelligent research done over the issue of ‘global warming’. This is the movie which explains the 'in and out' of this hot issue in a very-very impeccable way. Any layman could easily understand the whole issue with ease. Before, I never knew that 'global warming' is different from 'depletion of Ozone layer' and that the latter is no more a pressing problem because the production of the responsible chemicals is already curbed. This movie can make one impatient (it did that to me…) because this movie disseminates the knowledge about our dark future. The future with high temperatures, major cities submerged in water, environmental imbalance, draughts, floods, diseases and much more.
Al Gore, the noble laureate for peace and the former United States vice president presents this ppt to an audience and as he said that he has presented this almost 1000 times before. He had been involved with this cause for very long time and wanted to make a lasting impact by becoming the president. This movie shows Al Gore’s anger over the powerful people who had deaf ears to the heaviest problem of our times. His way to contribute to earth is through continuously accumulating knowledge, understanding it thoroughly and presenting to the people to wake them up to the ground realities of global warming.
Al Gore touches upon the issue of Kyoto protocol and supports his point against American policies by informing about her Fuel economy standards which are lower compared with those in the countries like Japan, Korea, China and EU.

The film ends with a surprising but scientifically approved statement :

Flicka

Flicka is the story of a Girl, daughter of a ranch owner. This young girl named Katy had seen a mustang in her childhood and became fond of her (mustang is a wild horse, a female one in the story), however the family won’t allow her to go close to the horse. As time passed by, Katy was sent to the college for few years and when she returns, this black horse was not there. Katy was an adventurous girl who liked the horses very much. One day she comes out from home in morning darkness , took a horse from their bunch and go out for a long ride. And far away she finds the same Mustang. From somewhere, a cougar approaches there, but the mustang runs her away. Katy used to think about the horses all the time and the ranch was a perfect place for her. Katy named her Flicka. Katy tried to get close to Flicka and tries to ride her but was thrown and got some injuries. Her father realized that it is time for some hard steps and he sent Flicka to someone who would use her commercially in games. This made Katie very upset. One day she visited a fair along with father, mother and borther and seen Flicka in the wild horse race. Katy managed to get in the wild horse race and went over Flicka to run away. The police and the family tried to search for them in the jungle. It was dark night and bad weather. Katy did not know where they have arrived. Suddenly they were attacked by the cougar. Cougar wound Flicka badly. When the family found them in the night, Katy was in a high fever and Flicka was beyond recovery. Looking at the condition of Flicka, Katy’s father decides to put down Flicka. But after getting Katy’s heartbroken approval, he instead goes in the jungle and shoots the cougar. Katy’s assumes that Flicka is down after hearing the gun shot. Katy wakes up next morning and her father gives her the surprise of bandaged but alive Flicka. This makes Katy very happy. Katy’s brother, who instead wanted to go to college, gets approval from father to go to the college and Katy stays back to take care of the ranch. The movie ends with the father and Katy sitting on their horses looking at the landscapes. The ending scene shows Katy on Flicka running in the vast green grounds…….
A place to be optimistic about the future..
The place that helps them to be what they wanna be …
That makes you feel that your life makes a sense…
The place where they can feel what I feel when I am riding Flicka..
Because when I ride, all I ride is…….
Freeing…..

Fear

When a being carries a fear, he/she tries to improves on his/her weaknesses. When a being carries no fear, he/she tries to build on his strengths.I want to get rid of my fears. The fears which makes me to underperform many a times. The key to performance is mostly playing fully to one's strengths. So fears are your obstacles which stops you from reaching to your full potential. Keeping fears away takes more than just a short thinking. It need a continuous reminder to the self about breathing full & enjoying the freedom of thoughts. For those moments, if u can catch-up with your strenghts, you will easily know what you are capable of.
Sometimes, while thinking about some dreadful issue at work place, if we come across an idea, which could give us a lead against our fears, we march with confidence, as if we have no fear left. But isn't this is an example of local fear ? I am talking about a fear which is prevailing in ourselves. A fear from unseen, a fear from unrecognizable. Thats the nature of the grand fear, which tells us that we are limited. And this thought kills our progress. Some of us who are smarter, they know how to manipulate ourselves. They are disciplined, hard working and they seem to have achieved success. If you are one of them, don't you have any fears ? Haven't your brain progressed towards evaluating a situation before coming to a conclusion ?, My point is......don't you realise that unless you get enough evidence that you can succeed, you are negative. That is the fear i am knocking about. (You might call it negative thinking / pessimism or whatever ...... but everyone has it, only the degree matters). And to one's surprise, it alone holds one's key to success..
Conviction is said to be the key to success. If you too think so, consider the following analogy.... If fearlessness is equal to a German engineered BMW engine with no flaws, then conviction is a repairing tool for a flawed car engine. Both engines can make you reach to a set destination. But while BMW shall make you a smooth sail with enjoyment, Repaired engine need to be handled with care and if disturned once, it can give you enough pains...
Ever seen a child ?.....Thats is the real human nature. Expansion of possibilities. Arrival of positive before negative is the essence of happiness and which reflects an absence of fear....
My personal encounter with this contrast happened when i exercised 'Art of Living' for few months. Everyday became better..... Possiby it has happened because the exercises enlarges lungs and increases blood flow in brain and thereby causing better concentration levels. Whether it is physical, or spiritual or anything which you might conclude.... I see that unless we overcome our fears, we shall not utilise ourselves completely..
You, Me and Everyone around has capabilities to reach to any thinkable extent, provided we can eliminate fear from within. I find this one quite true......
"If fear alters behavior, you're already defeated.” --Brenda Hammond

Brain can improve infinitely...

Without an idea of 'WHAT', I have started writing this message. Because I know the answer of 'WHY’. The very answer is the course of writing essays sometimes gets so taxing because of unending scope of improvements that it is largely a question of thought process improvement at a very basic level. It is quite disturbing but obvious to question myself (in those persisting moments) that why I have not learnt these miraculous way of expressions earlier. Rambling over such thoughts, I do spend whole nights piercing into my laptop unless I get bored with what I am doing (and that is when I go out for a puff) or I find my eyes getting close due to sleep. If you have not got the answer yet, this is to map my progress in expressing myself at a separate platform, other than that of B school application essays.
I am done and let me accept that though the above is making sense but it was not actually structured in my grey cells as should have been and so I need to emphasis on the structure well. This is never ending and because our conscious knows the reality and truth better than our brain. And it says that I will improve while writing like this. Thus I am still continuing. I want to train my brain while writing and that is exactly 'HOW' I am doing now. Can we call this process as analogy to the functioning of RAM in a computer ? I think yes, and here the hardware is already provided with, just need to grease the required cells efficiently. That is called training. Don’t you think that we need to grease our newly started cells for their proper functioning? As said in "Emotional Intelligence" - there are almost infinite circuits in the brain, which in themselves contain a way to think anything; it means your own brain is capable of thinking like Edison as well as like Mahatma Gandhi. In a normal way, people use only 2% of their brain capabilities. So that is what I am trying to increase now about my grey cells.
Irrespective of your current level, grace come in jumping to the next...... and the way is shown by Thomas Alva Edison by the following saying;

My ISB Interview
I reached at the venue 1 hr in advance and waited there while talking to two more aspirants.
15 minutes prior to scheduled time, i was given a piece of paper with the instructions to write 100 words on "FAITH".
I started with "faith is one of the very very important intangible characteristic of any relationship"... and tried linking that with the growing need of rules and lawyers in the business world which shows the lack of faith in the environment. However, not just due to faith factor, but since organisations are making deals with the new places, rules are necessary. Because faith takes some time to develope.
I ended as "faith is very delicate, it might take years to develope but can be shattered in a much lesser time."
Then i was called in my Mr Madhav, a younger chap and i followed him to the interview room, where one senior person was seated. Both of them made a warm welcome and we started with their first question (the senior asked most of the questions during the interview)......... what Lanxess exactly do....
I answered calmly and completely. Since this was the first question and i was not yet comfortable, i took this easy question as an opportunity to make mysef comfortable with the environment and to build my confidence. Then they asked about one of the project mentioned- which too went well.
Mr Raghav asked me about the growth rates which i have achieved and how did i achieve it. Thats went okie.
The next question was about my toughest project and how did i handle it ??
This somehow din't go okie..in hindsight, i think i must have answered in a different way...
They questioned me about my choice of consultancy and then aske me a problem "How much is the market for neck Ties in India ?" They asked me to take time and think. I answered "People wear ties when they are in the business centers like this. I assume, there are 100 more business centers like this with 200 people in each of them, further i assume that everyne has 10 ties. thus figure of Tie usage in Mumbai comes out to be 2,00,000"
The interviewers gave no impressions and moved to the next question....
"As you have mentioned in your essay, that you are the 'best bad news' carrier. So how do you do that ?"... Now here, my answers were basically, half complete and i must have thought about it in more details because they demanded it and i could not convince them..
With this it comes to an end and they offered me an answer. I asked about the exchange program. The gentleman has ansered my question earnestly.
They almost said "okie thanks" ... then the elder interviewer caught my attention and explained me the catches in my choice of consultancy. I can say his careful selection of words was that of school representative but at the same time was of a mentor also. This gentleman told me that they will send the assessment to the adcom and the final decision will come from there. But he explained to me that the better field for me is to target sales and marketing because if i spend my year with a target to join consultancy, but probably looking at my schooling (non IIT) , GMAT score , consultancy firm might not even short list me. It doesnt necessary follows but there should be a backup plan. He explained that to me in details and as i heard that.. all that made sense to me... I listened to him assertively.
With this we concluded and i come out with a better feeling than that i had in my previous interviews.....
I am certainly hopeful about ISB now.....
